Nigel spoke to ele HOME about the top five tips when planning a spring garden:

#1 Tip: Plan your layout

When designing your spring garden, planning the layout and checking its functionality is key. A carefully planned layout ensures your outdoor space is not only visually appealing but also practical and easy to navigate.

Consider creating distinct zones for different purposes, such as a casual seating area, a dining space to entertain, and if you have kids, a set area for them to play will ensure the outdoor spaces are always used.

Once you plan out the space, walk around each area with the plan in hand and make sure there’s enough room. For e.g., if you’re planning on having a 12-seater dining table, don’t forget to allow for chairs and room to walk around the table. This part of the planning is essential to ensure each space functions as you want it to.

When reviewing the plans use my checklist: ‘What am I seeing? What am I hearing? What am I doing?’ This is a great way to ensure your vision is practically coming to life.

#2 Tip: Plan for hardscaping

When designing a spring garden, planning the hardscaping elements such as pathways, retaining walls, and pergolas is essential for adding structure, visual interest, and functionality to your outdoor space. These features not only enhance the aesthetics of the garden but also provide defined areas for relaxation, entertainment, and practical use.

By integrating pathways for easy navigation, retaining walls for terracing or defining garden beds, and pergolas for shade and visual appeal, you can create a well-balanced and inviting outdoor environment that complements the beauty of your plants and flowers.

Ask yourself, ‘how does this area connect to the house and other areas?’ to check the flow into and out of the house and surrounding outdoor areas.

#3 Tip: Choose a colour scheme and style

Crafting the ideal colour scheme and style for your spring garden holds immense importance in landscaping. Beyond just enhancing the visual appeal, it sets the tone and atmosphere of the outdoor space, creating a cohesive and harmonious environment. By meticulously selecting colours and styles that resonate with your vision, you can inject your garden with a distinct character that mirrors your unique landscaping preferences and expertise.

This thoughtful process doesn’t just impact your design selections, it guarantees a garden layout that flows effortlessly, brimming with allure and elegance. The result is a serene sanctuary, inviting you to unwind and revel in the beauty of your garden throughout the springtime.

When choosing the colour/style, look at each outdoor space separately, then all outdoor spaces together. This will make sure the hardscaping materials like wood, tiles and pebbles match the colours of the flowers and exterior of the house.

#4 Tip: Pick bee attracting plants

Choosing plants for your spring garden, particularly bee-friendly plants and vegetables, is fundamental for establishing a flourishing ecosystem. Bee-friendly plants play a vital role in supporting pollinators like bees. Which are essential for pollinating flowers, fruits, and vegetables, fostering biodiversity and ensuring a vibrant garden.

Additionally, cultivating vegetables adds a functional dimension to your garden, offering fresh produce while bolstering local ecosystems, enriching the garden’s ecological balance and providing sustainable benefits.

#5 Tip: Pick plants for each season

By carefully selecting plants that are suitable for the spring season, you guarantee not just healthy growth but also a garden that remains visually stunning year-round. Seasonal plant choices are crucial for sustaining a garden that changes with each season, offering perpetual beauty and fascination throughout the year, a key aspect for a landscaper to create a dynamic and captivating outdoor space. Choosing plants that thrive in different seasons is vital for maintaining a vibrant garden that evolves and flourishes throughout the year.

Selecting a variety of plants that bloom and change with each season, ensures a garden that remains visually appealing, engaging, and full of life no matter the time of year. This diversity not only adds interest and beauty but also supports the ecosystem by providing habitats and food sources for various wildlife, contributing to the overall health and balance of your garden.
