With Queensland’s renowned Great Barrier Reef and tropical rainforest up the road, Keppel Island only a brief ferry ride away and some of Australia’s most beautiful untouched coastlines – Yeppoon has it all. Surfside Motel is one of the last original motels in the beautiful coastal community of Yeppoon; built in the late 1950’s, it still has that old beachside holiday charm with a fresh plantation flair. Owners Trevor and Kylie Thomasson purchased Surfside 15 years ago, which boasted bright green walls, gravel driveways and a busted vibe. After an unplanned hailstorm event in April 2020, and with over 30 years of experience in the building and design industry, an epic refurb challenge was on.
With an emphasis on keeping that old motel vibe, it was time to switch the lime green out for a neutral white linear board and ditch the gravel for beautiful timber sleeper driveways. The nostalgic holiday feel is sustained with a sitting area, beachside enclosed by breezeblocks and the old-style drive-up to your-door parking arrangement. As part of the project, the pool area was completely refurbished and is now surrounded by polished concrete, an outdoor shower and beautiful, lush grass. The pool area is a summer paradise, perfect for a touch of sun and a beer or two.
Recently acquired and available to be booked is The Surf House, right next door to Surfside; although not yet wholly renovated, watch this space…. The Surf House rocks that 1960’s ambiance, with a vast indoor sitting lounge area perfect for looking over the luminous islands.
The preferred method of bookings is old style, so give Trevor or Kylie a call or book via their website, to snatch up one of the thirteen rooms or The Surf House. All rooms have kitchenettes, air conditioning, super-fast Wi-Fi and the most comfortable beds, surrounded by furniture predominantly built by Trevor. Upon check-in, Surfside’s friendly staff will greet you and share local knowledge of the Capricorn coast and all the must-do’s whilst visiting.
