Reviving Istanbul’s Heritage: A Stunning Bosphorus Mansion Transformed into a Luxurious Contemporary Home

On the stunning Bosphorus Coast, a historical gem has been reborn. Design agency, escapefromsofa, meticulously transformed a once-faded Ottoman mansion into a luxurious contemporary home, blending rich cultural heritage with modern elegance. With natural materials and soft hues, this stunning residence honors Istanbul’s past while embracing the comforts of today.

On the picturesque Bosphorus Coast in Turkey, the interior architecture and design agency escapefromsofa has transformed this historical gem into a luxurious contemporary home. Situated on a plot of around 4000m2 along the shores of Anadolu Hisari, this home blends the rich cultural heritage of the site with a modern approach that expresses the brand’s taste for sophisticated refinement. The design ethos of escapefromsofa fuses the historical essence of the location, which dates back to the Byzantine era, by integrating ceiling mouldings and employing an earthy palette throughout to reflect the surrounding nature.

The home itself, constructed during the Ottoman period, is situated behind a classic waterfront mansion historically used as a winter lodge, showcasing the architectural and cultural richness characteristic of its time. Sustainability and the clients’ personal tastes played a crucial role, along with the geographic and climatic features of the region, shaping the design’s functional and aesthetic aspects.

The home is adorned with natural materials and textures such as travertine, marble, oakwood paneling, coupled with luxurious soft furnishings, creating a warm inviting atmosphere. The entrance hall opens to a spacious living space featuring travertine stone columns and emphasising the grandeur of the space. Soft curves dominate the room, through the wall panelling elements and furniture to the central niche window overlooking the waterside view.

Adjacent to the living area, the dining room continues the curved interior architecture, featuring arched windows and a stone dining table surrounded by rounded dining chairs. A discreet fireplace integrated into a stone wall enhances the room’s convivial ambiance, making it a perfect space for gatherings. The ground floor also includes a 300m² terrace that embraces the coastal scenery, offering a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.

Upstairs, the master suite is a haven of tranquility. Rendered in a muted palette, the room features light oak window frames and flooring, complemented by soft backlighting that frames the bright window. The ensuite bathroom is a sanctuary of pale stone, boasting a walk-in shower and minimalist fittings that emphasise luxury and comfort. Also on this floor are two children’s bedrooms and an additional living space. Under the onion-domed roof, a round table provides breathtaking views of the Bosphorus, while an observation terrace offers an uninterrupted panorama of both bridges, adding to the home’s allure. The attic features a separate living area where the family spends time together.

Who lives here

The home belongs to Haydar and Bige, co-founders of Kiosk Interior, both originally from Turkey. Haydar is an interior architect, and they live with their two daughters, Lalin and Mila. Haydar and Bige’s aesthetic was shaped by the rich cultures of Paris and Istanbul, influencing their bohemian-bourgeois lifestyle.

In his work, Haydar is captivated by the natural beauty of textures and colours, using minimalist lines to create homes that reflect lived experiences, offering both visual pleasure and spiritual refuge. The home’s true real name is derived from a windmill that once stood in its garden, now only a memory. Though the windmill is long gone, its essence remains. For Haydar and Bige, naming the home after the windmill symbolises how the project is more than just a renovation; it is a revival of Istanbul’s enduring spirit.

The city’s deep history has always been a source of inspiration for Haydar, and that influence was central to the renovation. The mansion’s faded grandeur had long captivated him, and with escapefromsofa’s architectural talent and expertise, they finally brought it back to life.

This project reflects both Haydar’s character and Istanbul’s historical texture. Natural, timeless materials—travertine stone, oak parquet flooring, and wall panelling—aligned perfectly with escapefromsofa’s signature style. Earth tones and pastel shades create a modern yet timeless aesthetic, enhancing the tranquility and warmth of the space. Ultimately, the home became a delicate blend of nature and history, honouring Istanbul’s heritage while looking to the future.
