Chatterbox House is a quietly inventive family home in Melbourne, designed on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people by Nest Architects in collaboration with Studio Esar. Drawing inspiration from the childhood paper folding game Chatterbox, the home is organised as a series of interlocking volumes that unfold gradually, rather than revealing everything at once.
Instead of one dominant form, the house is broken into smaller, distinct spaces connected by compact circulation zones. This approach reduces the visual mass of the building and allows light to enter from multiple directions throughout the day. Each room feels considered and calm, with shifting perspectives that change as you move through the home.
Originally a neglected structure, the project has been transformed into a warm and welcoming residence that places real emphasis on outdoor space. A generous garden anchors the home, while a sequence of courtyards draws light deep into the plan, ensuring even the most internal areas feel open and connected to nature. The result is a house that feels bright without being exposed, and private without being closed off.

At the heart of the home is a sunken living room, designed to feel cocooned and intimate. This is where the architecture softens and the atmosphere becomes more relaxed. Anchoring the space is the MARCEL | CHAIR by Ritzwell, designed by Shinsaku Miyamoto. Crafted from solid walnut, the chair’s rounded silhouette and generous proportions echo the gentle geometry of the room itself. Paired with a circular table, it reinforces a sense of balance, comfort, and quiet harmony.
Elegant without feeling formal, the MARCEL | CHAIR complements the playful spirit of Chatterbox House perfectly. Its embracing form and natural warmth enhance the relaxed mood of the interior, proving how thoughtful furniture selection can elevate not just a room, but the way a home is experienced.

Chatterbox House is ultimately a project about light, movement, and everyday joy. Through careful planning, layered spaces, and moments of softness, it shows how architecture can feel both clever and deeply human at the same time.
